EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – The Edmonton Public School Board has approved spending $750,000 to install security cameras at all elementary schools.
Video surveillance cameras are already installed in 15 elementary schools, five elementary/junior high schools and four junior high schools in the district.
With the budget approval, officials will place cameras at an additional 64 elementary schools, four elementary/junior high schools and eight junior high schools, Global News reports.
The district says the cameras will allow staff to monitor who is entering and exiting the main building since not all schools are designed so main office staff can see the front doors.
While most parents support adding the cameras, some human rights advocates believe the cameras are infringements on rights of privacy.
