SHREVEPORT, La.—Centenary College Police officers shot to death a man outside of the school’s library who was reported to be acting strangely and armed with a weapon.
As the officers attempted to contact the suspect around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, there was a struggle and the man allegedly pulled out a gun, reports KSLA. One of the campus officers then shot the man.
The unidentified suspect was then transported to a local hospital where he died. One of the officers involved in the incident sustained minor injuries.
But for the officer, no other members of the Centenary College community, including students, faculty or staff, were hurt.
Centenary President David Rowe described on Facebook how the incident developed:
Shortly after 4:30 p.m., a visitor to campus sought help from staff members on the second floor of Hamilton Hall. The staff members attempted to assist him, but because he was exhibiting suspicious behavior, they contacted the Department of Public Safety. DPS advised the occupants of Hamilton Hall to take precautions.
DPS officers also came to Hamilton Hall to monitor the situation. Once the man exited the building, the staff members were able to tell DPS that the man had a handgun. DPS officers attempted to stop the man, and he raised his firearm at one of the officers. At this point, another DPS officer shot him. Paramedics were called to campus to attend to his injuries, but he later died.
