San Francisco State University campus police, joined by officers from the San Francisco Police Department, arrested 33 campus protestors a day after students voiced dissent for fee hikes and budget cuts made by UC regents in mid-November.
The protesting students had locked themselves inside the business administration building and barricaded doors on Dec. 9, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Officers charged 23 students with a misdemeanor for suspicion of trespassing, while 10 others were charged with suspicion of unlawful assembly and resisting arrest.
Other protesters were cited and released by police for blocking traffic outside of campus in defense of their arrested campaigners.
The UC Board of Regents approved a 32 percent fee increase at all 10 UC campuses in November. The decision spurred a movement of student protestors at various campuses. Similar student occupations have occurred at UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz.
