An Arizona school district could face felony charges after old chemistry materials contaminated the Agua Fria High School campus. According to the Avondale Police Department, the district had been repeatedly urged by school employees to remove the hazardous materials, including the chemical mercury.
According to The Arizona Republic, a former science teacher at the school notified the acting principal about the dangerous chemicals nearly two years before the spill. In 2008, a new school principal had requested $4,000 from the district to remove the old materials. The district’s inactions have sparked a formal investigation.
Police are currently waiting for a report from the Arizona Department of Health to determine the level of contamination and possible health risks associated with the spill.
The investigation will not target specific people involved with the incident. Instead, the investigation will focus on the district.
