OAKLAND, Calif. – The city of Oakland was awarded a $803,700 grant for a “Safe Routes to School Program” from CalTrans. The program will improve the safety conditions surrounding several schools in the city.
Out of the 139 statewide projects that receive funding, Oakland was awarded the 16th largest award.
Construction for the improvements is scheduled to begin in late 2009 and should be completed by mid-2010. Castlemont Community of Small Schools, E.C. Reems Academy, Oakland Technical High School and Youth Uprising Center are the schools expected to benefit from the grant.
Safe Routes to School is an initiative designed to increase street safety in communities throughout the United States.
