A California hospital is restructuring its employment levels in what it says is a reaction to the changing health care landscape.
On Feb. 23 Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, California said in a letter to city officials that 96 positions will be cut, mostly in the security, food service and housekeeping industries, according to modbee.com.
Many other members of the hospital staff may also have their hours reduced. Overall, 134 positions “will be impacted” by the restructuring, according to Craig Baize, a spokesman for the hospital. Baize also said the hospital hopes to offer new jobs to some of the people it’s laying off.

The hospital’s statement said it is not reducing staff in areas that affect patient care. Hospital CEO Daryn Kumar said the center will continue to reduce its operating costs.
Memorial Medical Center is a 423-bed hospital that currently has about 2,400 employees. In 2012 the hospital eliminated 114 positions due to a drop in patient admissions and insurer payments, and the following year the hospital eliminated an additional 39 positions.
