Calgary Hospitals Cut Security to Slash Costs

CALGARY, Alberta, Canada
Published: December 9, 2009

Starting next spring, Calgary hospitals will be working with fewer security officers in an attempt to trim budget costs. The cuts will reflect a 20 percent reduction in security staff.

The decision was made by the Alberta health superboard. The board plans to distribute the remaining officers to create a better balance of security at the facilities. By April, all Alberta hospital security will adopt the Edmonton region’s model of better-trained peace officers working alongside contract security staff, reports the Calgary Herald.

Contract security providers, according to the news report, will absorb the majority of the 200 expected staff cuts. However, the superboard’s overall security ranks will still be thinned by 90 people.

Tony Weeks, the board’s director of protective services and parking, doesn’t believe Calgary hospital’s safety will be compromised.
