HERSHEY, Pa. — A 14-year-old boy who was denied enrollment at a private boarding school due to his HIV status will receive $700,000 in a discrimination settlement.
The Milton Hershey School must also pay $15,000 in civil penalties and provide HIV training for students and staff members, the Associated Press reports. The Philadelphia-based AIDS Law Project sued the school last year for denying enrollment to the boy on grounds that he would be a threat to the health and safety of other students.
In August, the school reversed its policy and announced it would treat applicants with HIV the same as others.
