Baruch College Fraternity Pledge Dies During Hazing Ritual

Published: December 15, 2013

NEW YORK — A freshman at Baruch College has died from critical head injuries from blunt force trauma as part of a hazing ritual.

The members of Pi Delta Psi fraternity took pledges to the Poconos to participate in an initiation ritual on Dec. 8. Chun “Michael” Deng, 19, along with other pledges, was blindfolded and wore a backpack containing 20 pounds of sand. The goal of the ritual was to make it to a certain member without being tackled by other members, the Associated Press reports.

When Deng was shoved, he fell and struck his head and went unconscious. Rather than immediately taking Deng to the hospital, fraternity members waited two hours to make sure the victim received medical attention.

Baruch University has suspended the fraternity.
