Autism Rates Double in 6 Years
About 1 in 91 children are diagnosed with autism, according to a survey from the National Survey of Children’s Health. The number is nearly double the estimates made in the last U.S. government survey.
The increased rate of children with autism has many doctors and parents calling for more research and funding. However, some autism specialists do not believe the new number is an official estimate.
The survey was sent to parents of 78,000 children. According to skeptics, the survey wasn’t set up to confirm or explore each time a parent reported an autism diagnosis, reported ABCnews.com. Some specialists are also leery about the findings because of the high rate of recovery from autism reported by the parents.
The new survey did confirmed a commonly known gender difference in the autism community. Boys are four times more likely to be autistic than girls.
