MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Ivery Smith took a bullet to the hand when he tried to run down a campus security officer at Alabama State University (ASU) on the night of July 26.
At approximately 10:30 pm, Smith, who does not attend ASU, attempted to drive into the school and was stopped by campus police. When he failed to produce valid identification, as the school requires after hours, the security officers ordered him to turn around and leave campus. Smith allegedly responded by driving his car toward one of the officers, who shot him in the hand.
The unnamed security officer was placed on 3-day administrative leave. After receiving treatment at the hospital Smith was taken to the county jail, where he faces charges of second-degree assault.
