After a spike in assaults on the campus of the University of Colorado (CU), six new police officers will help patrol at the university, according to dailycamera.com.

By 2011, the CU Police Department’s staff will grow to 46 officers. With the addition of the new officers, as many as 10 will patrol between the hours of 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

University officials decided to increase the number of officers on campus after four CU students reported sexual assaults and two reported physical assaults between late October and early December of last year.

The university will spend about $70,000 a year from the campus general fund for each new police hire, according to the news report.
