A psych patient at Massachusetts General Hospital was shot and killed by an off-duty security guard after the patient allegedly stabbed a female doctor. The doctor was listed in stable condition.
According to reports, 37-year-old Jay Carciero, a bipolar patient at the facility, was in Dr. Astrid Desrosiers’ office during the attack.
Off-duty officer Paul Langone, 33, was not affiliated with the hospital, according to the Associated Press. He ordered Carciero to drop the weapon and shot him when the patient didn’t comply. According to The Boston Herald, witness accounts say Langone acted lawfully.
The incident occurred at the Massachusetts General Hospital Bipolar Clinic and Research Program, located next to the main hospital building. Authorities locked down the building and blocked nearby streets for about an hour.
Massachusetts General Hospital has had three separate security-related incidents in less than two weeks, including a recent report of a woman found rifling through an employee’s personal belongings on a restricted floor of the hospital.
