NOGALES, Ariz. – The Nogales Unified School District (NUSD) will now receive funding for its school resource officers (SROs) from the city of Nogales.
Previously, the district was awarded a school safety grant from the Arizona Department of Education. The district would use that money to reimburse the city and the county for the time officers spent in the schools.
However, the district did not receive the grant this year, which resulted in the loss of $240,000 for SROs.
The city council voted Aug. 11 to fund the SRO program for approximately $170,000. The Nogales Police Department officers will be placed at Nogales and Pierson Vocational high schools and Wade Carpenter Middle School.
