5th Grader’s Parents: Bullying Prompted Suicide
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.—Police are investigating the death of a fifth grade student at St. Anastasia Catholic School whose parents believe she hanged herself as a result of bullying.
Celina Okwuone, 11, hanged herself in her room using a belt wrapped around a metal shelf, reports ABC News. Her body was found by her parents shortly before midnight on May 20.
The Okwuone found the victim’s diary, which contained entries about her being bullied, shortly after they called police. Detectives are now talking to students and teachers at St. Anastasia to determine the extent to which the girl was harassed.
The school sent out a letter to parents informing them of the incident.
No one has been charged for the crime.
Okwuone’s suicide is the latest in a spate of child suicides as the result of bullying.
