Alabama School Guard Shoots, Kills Burglary Suspect
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A security officer at Hayes High School shot and killed a suspected intruder June 5.
The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. when two security officers were dispatched to the campus to respond to a suspected burglary in progress. When they arrived, the guards witnessed 24-year-old Alfonzo Turner, a mentally disabled man, leaving the school through a window.
Just before the guards arrived, Turner was eating soup and chips he found at the school. He left the scene after the alarm sounded.
According to a Birmingham City Schools spokesperson, while one of the guards was handcuffing Turner, the suspect attacked him. Both men fell to the ground. During the struggle, the security officer’s gun accidentally discharged.
The suspect later died in the hospital.
The officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid leave while the incident is investigated.
