CHICAGO – A student at Chicago Vocational Career Academy faces criminal charges after a gun he snuck onto campus accidentally went off and injured himself and another student April 10.
Demond Gore, 15, has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school after the 9mm handgun he smuggled onto campus went off. The gun discharged a single bullet that went through Gore’s thigh, then through nearby student Jodale Woodfork’s, 14, thigh.
The shot sent the class into a frenzied evacuation in which Gore limped outside and dumped the gun near the front of the building. After being caught re-entering the building, Gore led an officer to the gun. No magazine or clip was found in the gun. Police speculate that Gore may not have been aware a bullet was in the chamber.
This was the second shooting on campus in the past month. On March 22, two students were injured standing in the school parking lot when the occupant of a car opened fire.
If convicted, Gore faces probation or up to three years in prison.
