BOULDER, Colo. — As many as 85 Fireside Elementary School fifth graders and 14 adult chaperones were airlifted from an outside education center Saturday after floodwaters made roads unsafe for the group to return to the school.
The group had been stuck at Cal-Wood Education Center, which provides outdoor programs. On its Web site, the center kept parents updated Friday on the status of their children, as officials figured out a way to get students home safely.
Eventually, a helicopter collected the group from the mountainside and flew them to Boulder Municipal Airport. Buses later took the group back to Fireside Elementary, NBCNew.com reports.
The Colorado National Guard has rescued 120 people since the devastating floods began, and there are still scores of people unaccounted for.
