8 Percent of Sports Fans Legally Drunk After Game, Study Finds

A University of Minnesota study found that eight percent of sports fans leaving games are legally drunk. Almost 40 percent of fans consume alcohol during the sporting event.

The study, which was published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, tested 362 adults as they were leaving 13 professional baseball games and three football games. Of those, eight percent were legally drunk at the time of the test, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The study also found that tailgaters who drank prior to the start of the game were 14 times more likely to drive drunk. Also, fans younger than 35-years-old were more likely to be inebriated.
