ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — As many as eight arrests have been made in connection with the 126 crimes reports, dating back to 2007, that Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) campus police failed to investigate.
Elizabeth City Police Department (ECPD) officers have taken over school security in an effort to solve the backlog of cases. In addition to the arrests, the department has closed 37 cases as unsolved after exhausting leads, as well as 14 cases after victims would not cooperate. One case was closed because police said the allegations were unfounded, Hampton Roads reports.
This month, both ECSU Police Chief Sam Beaumon and Chancellor Willie Gilchrist announced their resignations following allegations of obstruction of justice and witness intimidation by campus police. On May 24, the president of the University of North Carolina public university system, Tom Ross, announced that former Court of Appeals judge Charles Becton will become interim chancellor at the school effective July 1.
