MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The names and Social Security numbers of 75,000 students, faculty and staff may have been exposed when a computer system at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) was hacked and infected with malicious software.
Investigators have no evidence that the data was viewed or stolen, according to UWM officials, the Journal Sentinel reports. The university is a research institution with a significant number of ongoing projects. Tom Luljak, UWM’s vice chancellor for university relations, said the attack could have been an attempt to gain access to work being done at the university.
The malicious software was installed remotely and was discovered on May 25. It allowed backdoor access to a database that is used for scanning and viewing documents.
