On June 10, 2013, Brendan Hernandez was helping two NYPD officers move a psychiatric patient out of an ambulance when the patient tried to run away. During the struggle, the patient grabbed one of the officer’s guns and shot an officer in the foot.
Hernandez tackled the patient and wrestled the weapon away from him as the other officer helped subdue the patient. Hernandez then immediately began giving the wounded officer treatment.
Hernandez had previously applied to become a police officer but wasn’t accepted. After his heroic acts, however, then-NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly ordered his application be reconsidered.
