LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas (KU) cancelled classes on March 13 after 60 percent of its buildings were found to have been damaged by severe weather the day before.
Classes were not held so that maintenance crews could repair the torn rooftops, fallen trees and broken glass that resulted from severe storms passing through the area. The campus was closed to all vehicle traffic. School officials also discouraged pedestrian traffic. Damage to KU is reported to be more than $6 million.
Although some residents say they saw a tornado, the National Weather Service has not confirmed that one touched down at or near KU. More than 100 other twisters, however, were reported to have hit other areas of the Midwest. The death toll from the storms is now at 10.
