No Powder Found in Letter That ‘Burned’ Hospital Employees

Published: October 6, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. — Six employees of the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center reported receiving burns on Wednesday after they opened an envelope that was initially thought to contain a powdery substance.

The hospital’s ventilation system was shut down while the employee were quarantined and decontaminated, the Associated Press reports. They reportedly suffered burns, as well as eye, hand and mouth irritation.

The envelope was handed over to the FBI, Fox 12 reports. Lab technicians determined that there was no power visible in or on the letter, and no harmful substances present. Federals agents are now investigating what caused the irritation.
