BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Broward School District will spend $555,000 for 12 police officers to patrol six elementary schools.
Every middle and high school in the district has at least one officer monitoring their campuses while elementary schools do not. The new officers will patrol schools in Hollywood, Coconut Creek, Pembroke Pines, Wilton Manors, Lauderhill and Davie. Most cities expect the officer in schools by the end of the year, Sun Sentinel reports.
In addition to patrolling, the officers will develop relationships with students to prevent drug use and crime. To cut costs, schools in Hollywood and Coconut Creek plan to hire retired officers rather than pay a full salary and benefits package for a full-time officer.
