4 Florida Teenage Boys Charged as Adults in Homeless Man Assault

Published: October 16, 2006

BROWARD, Fla. -Prosecutors charged four Fort Lauderdale teens on Oct. 12 and 13 with attempted murder after they allegedly beat and stabbed a homeless man last month.

The attack took place on Sept. 20 in Esplanade Park, where William Tweeters, 44, was reading a book. Without provocation, the teenage boys punched and stabbed him, then rode off on their bicycles before police arrived.

Police were led to the teens after they were caught on a security camera at a nearby 7-Eleven on the same night of the attack.

One of the teens, Bobby Callins, 17, identified his three accomplices – Romel Jean Louis, Patrick Keels and Michael Livingston, all 15 – to police.

Assistant State Attorney Maria Schneider made the decision to try the four teens as adults after examining their school records and past history of violence.

William Tweeters is not the first homeless man to be attacked in Esplanade Park. Another man, Norris Gaynor, was found dead in January after being similarly attacked by another gang of teenagers.

The teenage boys are currently booked into juvenile cells at Broward jail.
