NEW YORK – As many as 30 people from Baruch College’s Pi Delta Psi fraternity chapter could face an array of criminal charges, ranging from hazing to homicide.
Last December, Chun “Michael” Deng, 19 died after he was pushed during a hazing ritual while on a retreat in the Poconos. Deng was blindfolded and wearing a backpack filled with 20 pounds of sand.
At one point during the hazing, Deng fell, struck his head and went unconscious. After two hours, three fraternity members took the victim to the hospital, where he died two days later.
Authorities have ruled the incident as a homicide and are now awaiting charges to be filed, ABC News reports.
Investigators said several fraternity members tried to hide their cell phones to keep authorities from seeing videos, photos and conversations about the hazing rituals.
Some students have been suspended by Baruch College. The fraternity has also been disbanded, NY1.com reports.
