PHOENIX – A shooting at South Mountain Community College left three injured and caused the school to be locked down for at least an hour July 24.
The gunman, 22-year-old Rodney Smith, is a former student of the college. According to the Associated Press, Smith and one of the victims had been fighting in the computer lab on campus. After the argument became physical, witnesses said they heard three shots. The two other victims were hit by stray bullets.
Nineteen-year-old Isaac Smith is in critical condition. According to police, the victim was arrested in 2007 for assaulting the suspect. Otisha Williams, 20, was upgraded from critical to stable condition and 17-year-old Christopher Taylor is said to be in stable condition. Both men suffer leg wounds and the woman was shot in the hip.
Smith was arrested at a nearby home. Additionally, his parents and three others were charged with failure to obey a police officer and interfering with an investigation.
Officials said as many as 30 people were in the computer lab when the shooting occurred; the computer lab is open to the public.
Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day.
Smith faces 12 counts of endangerment, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of misconduct involving weapons. His bail is set for $200,000.
