3 VA Clinics Expose Patients to HIV Through Unsterilized Equipment

Thousands of veterans have been told to get tested after a Veterans Affairs (VA) Department investigation revealed patients at three clinics were potentially exposed to infectious diseases – including HIV – through unsterilized equipment.

The VA is continuing their investigation to determine whether a patient’s positive HIV test and the unsterilized equipment are connected. The positive test was the first reported since the department warned veterans treated at the clinics that they might be at risk, according to the Associated Press.

The VA previously reported that hepatitis was found in 16 patients. However, the agency cautioned it was unclear if patients contracted the disease because of treatment at the facilities.
