3 Cleveland School Administrators Fined for Fire Violations

CLEVELAND – Several school administrators in Cleveland have incurred fines of $1,000 each and reprimands from superiors for violating fire safety laws.

Principal Joelle Hayes of Nathan Hale Middle School, Principal Lori Rondo of Robert Fulton Elementary School and Assistant Principal Mary J. Lawrence-McKinney of Almira Elementary School incurred the fines for failures to notify the Fire Department about small fires on their campuses. All three incidents involved students setting papers on fire in school hallways. Delays in school notification ranged from 22 minutes to approximately three hours.

These latest charges combine to total six local school administrators cited over the past year for fire code violations. The Plain Dealer reported that fire inspectors found more than 350 code violations, including failure to report fires and evacuate students, during a four year period. Fire prevention bureau officials indicate that fines have not been enforced against administrators.

The latest group of cited administrators face possible termination in the event of future violations.
