3 Chicago Teens Drown During Leadership Retreat
ALGONQUIN, Ill.
Three Chicago teens drowned Nov. 14 at a school-sponsored leadership retreat at Fox River in Algonquin, Ill., after their paddleboats sank, according to the Associated Press. The three boys – two seniors and one junior – were students at North Lawndale College Prep, a charter school on Chicago’s West Side.
Authorities reported the drownings were due to “shenanigans” after the teens snuck out of their cabins in the middle of the night. The students took paddleboats that were out of service for the season. The bottom plugs of the boats had been removed, allowing the vessels to take on water and eventually sink. Students on shore made an unsuccessful rescue attempt.
Thirty-one students were participating in the eight-day retreat at the camp. Four teachers from North Lawndale were chaperoning the retreat.
