Car accidents and cardiac arrest are two of the leading causes of death in America. Fortunately for one man, however, he didn’t become a statistic when he crashed his car last December. He is still alive thanks to two University of Rhode Island (URI) police officers who came to his rescue. They are this month’s Campus Safety Heroes.

Barry Blomstedt, 64, was leaving a URI basketball game on Dec. 5 when his vehicle struck two light poles, reports the Sun Chronicle. Officers Michael McCabe and Salvatore Bugge responded to the scene to find Blomstedt not moving and gave him CPR. The man had experienced a heart attack behind the wheel.
Although both officers said they were just doing their jobs, Blomstedt felt otherwise, as did the Rhode Island Senate, which formally recognized McCabe and Bugge.
Because of McCabe and Bugge’s heroic actions in saving a life, they have been named this month’s Campus Safety Heroes. Congratulations!
