During the Final Four NCAA Tournament, school officials increased security on campus to combat unruly behavior by students.

When the West Virginia University Mountaineers beat Georgetown in the Big East championship, the Morgantown Fire Department responded to 27 fires around the campus, according to USA Today. Additionally, police responded to 15 fire-related phone calls.

In an attempt to stop this problem, as many as 50 Morgantown police officers were placed throughout the campus on April 3, as well as officers from neighboring counties, when the Mountaineers played against Butler University in the semifinals of the tournament.

Officials stated that there was a zero-tolerance rule for vandalism, and the punishment for those who violated the rule could include expulsion.

Meanwhile, Duke University campus police stepped up security at the school for the April 5 finals game against Butler University, according to 1360 WCHL. Chief John Daily said the number of Duke police officers was increased and the school received assistance from the Durham County Sheriff’s Department.

Additionally, people who were not affiliated with the university were not allowed on campus on the night of the game.

The school celebrated its victory with a bonfire, and firefighters put it out around 2 a.m. A bonfire permit was obtained prior to the event date.

Campus police said there were about two responses by emergency medical services because of minor cuts; however, none of the responses were alcohol-related.
