2 Students Hospitalized for Sunburn After Field Trip

TACOMA, Wash. — Following a school field trip, two girls were hospitalized for severe sunburns. A Tacoma Public School District policy bans the use of sunscreen due to concerns about allergic reactions.

The school board said it has to ban sunscreen because of a state law, CTV.com reports. In all states except California, children are not allowed to bring sunscreens to school without a doctor’s note because they are considered to be an over the counter drug.

Jesse Michener said that school staff is aware that one of her daughters has very fair skin from a form of albinism, but they would not make an exception.
