SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Two more members of the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity have been sentenced to jail after pleading no contest to misdemeanor hazing in connection with the death of one of its pledges.
During the sentencing, Adam Marszal and Russell Taylor, both 23, apologized to the parents of Carson Starkey, the 18-year-old pledge who died from alcohol poisoning, reports Fox News. Starkey’s December 2008 death was the result of a hazing ritual in which he drank large amounts of alcohol in 90 minutes.
Marszal and Taylor were sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years’ probation. Additionally, they were ordered to perform 40 hours of community service or two presentations on the dangers of alcohol and hazing.
Two other SAE members pleaded no contest to misdemeanor hazing in June. They received similar sentences to Marszal and Taylor.
