BOSTON and CLEVELAND – According to ABC News, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation are now conducting random urine drug testing in their anesthesia residency teaching departments.
The new programs are in response to the high rate of addiction among anesthesiologists. In fact, according to a 2005 survey conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, about 80 percent of anesthesiology residency training programs have reported problems with substance abuse. Nearly one in five (19 percent) had a death resulting from an overdose.
