WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Two administrators at Willoughby South High School persuaded an armed student to turn himself in Sept. 2. The student, who was threatening to kill himself, was carrying more than 30 rounds of ammunition and had fired a shotgun twice in the school’s hallway.
The shooting occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. A 15-year-old unnamed student fired a bullet from a .40-caliber handgun into a trophy case and another into the ceiling.
The school was immediately placed under lockdown; however, Principal Paul Lombardo and Assistant Principal Jeff Lyons followed the student. The student told the administrators that he wanted to commit suicide, and the pair talked to the student until he finally relinquished his weapon.
The student was arrested by police and taken to a behavioral health center for evaluation. Authorities believe the young man wanted to kill himself in front of his girlfriend. Currently, no charges have been filed against him.
Classes resumed the following day. No one was hurt in the incident.
