ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Petersburg High School canceled classes Friday after a fire inside the school caused more than $1 million in damage.
Initial reports indicate that a blow torch used to lay down tar by an overnight construction crew on a building roof may have sparked the fire, the Tampa Bay Times reports. When fire crews arrived on the scene, flames were reportedly shooting through the roof of the school’s auditorium.
It took 40 firefighters two hours to extinguish the fire.
