AMHERST, Mass. – Twelve more University of Massachusetts students were arrested in association with a Dec. 15 campus riot, bringing the total to 23 people charged, 22 of which are students.
Campus police cross-referenced archived footage with school ID and driver’s license photos, interviewing more than 100 students, and verifying statements against residence hall swipe-card logs. Footage used in the investigation was obtained via campus surveillance cameras and cell phone video uploaded to the Web site Youtube.com by student witnesses.
Those arrested face rioting, disorderly conduct and failure to disperse charges. Among 55 students disciplined by the university’s internal judiciary system, five have been expelled and 28 suspended.
These charges stem from a riot following Umass’ loss to Appalachian State in the NCAA Division I-AA football championship, as reported by CS in December.
