DOVER, Del. – One of the students shot during the Delaware State University (DSU) shootings died Oct. 23.

Seventeen-year-old freshman Shalita K. Middleton died at 3:30 p.m. at Christiana Hospital in Newark. Family members stated that the internal injuries she suffered were too critical to overcome.

Middleton, along with Nathaniel Pugh, was shot Sept. 21. Middleton was shot in the abdomen, while Pugh endured an ankle wound. Accused of shooting them is 18-year-old freshman Loyer D. Braden.

Campus police never got the opportunity to question Middleton about the shooting, officials say.

Braden is being held on $192,000 bail. Originally set for $92,000, the judge increased bail after hearing about the victim’s death. He is charged with attempted murder, assault, as well as other offenses. However, with Middleton’s death, Braden will possibly be charged with murder.

The DSU community is deeply saddened by Middleton’s death. They plan to have a memorial to honor her, according to school officials.
