Hospital Director of the Year Makes the Business Case for Public Safety

Congratulations to Saratoga Hospital Director of Public Safety John DiNovo for winning the Campus Safety Director of the Year, Healthcare award. By documenting the services provided by his officers, he was able to upgrade his institution’s security technology, revamp his department and improve security in his hospital’s emergency room.

Campus: Saratoga Hospital is a 171-bed healthcare facility located in Saratoga, N.Y., which also has an onsite nursing home. It has nine locations, which include two urgent care centers, three family health centers and one same-day surgery facility. The institution employs 1,400 individuals, sees about 350,000 patients per year and hosts around 112,000 visitors annually. Because Saratoga Hospital is located in a resort area, in the summer the town’s population can increase five to seven times its normal size.

Department: 21 nonsworn, unarmed security officers

Experience: DiNovo has been with Saratoga Hospital since 2005 and is also one of his organization’s three lean leaders who facilitate process improvement initiatives throughout the organization. Prior to joining Saratoga, he served 20 years in law enforcement and 10 years with a software manufacturer that served the public safety realm. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and U.S. Secret Service Dignitary Protection School. DiNovo has undergraduate degrees in English, economics and business administration. He has a graduate certificate in criminal justice education.
