Details Released, Policies Change as Fatal Shooting Investigation Continues
The University of Cinicinnati has changed its policies following an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead.
UC officer Ray Tensing has been indicted for the fatal shooting of Sam Dubose during a traffic stop.
University of Cincinnati police will no longer be able to make arrests outside of campus after a university officer shot and killed a man during a traffic stop July 19.
University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono made the announcement July 23, according to local12.com. The school previously had a Memorandum of Understanding with the city of Cincinnati allowing university police to make arrests in some areas of the city.
The decision comes after university police officer Ray Tensing killed Samuel Dubose after Tensing pulled Dubose over for not having a front license plate. Radio traffic and incident reports released July 23 include details of Tensing being dragged by Dubose’s car before the officer fired one shot, which struck Dubose in the head, according to wlwt.com.
The recently released documents also include Tensing’s call to dispatch. “32 I am not injured. I almost got run over by the car. He took off on me. I discharged one round. struck the male in the head,” Tensing can be heard saying to the operator.
Fellow university officer Phillip Kidd reported that he witnessed Tensing be dragged and fire his weapon.
Dubose was pronounced dead at the scene. Tensing was later taken to the hospital and treated for pain in his left arm.
Tensing had joined the university’s force in April of 2014 after three years with Greenhills Police Deartment.
