Congratulations to the finalists in this year’s healthcare category. The hospital director of the year finalists are:
Margaret Brine, Director of Public Safety at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Notable Achievements:
- Implemented a training academy for public safety security officers and nurses
- Oversaw the construction of a $1.2 million on-campus 911 dispatch center
- Adopted a teletracking system to improve patient transport
Gerald Casey, Chief of Police at the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Hospital, Los Angeles.
Notable Achievements:
- Restructured and revamped entire department
- Saved $400,000 in the guard contract by leveraging technology and resource management
- Designed and procured a $2.1 million communications system
Kenneth Cheatle, Chief of Police at the Dallas County Hospital District DBA Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas
Notable Achievements:
- Ensured his department is diverse (race and gender) so the force mirrors the patient population
- Began an emergency medical technician program for officers
- Maintained officer morale despite a nearly two-year attack by the local media
David Corbin, the Director of Public Safety, Parking, Facilities and Engineering at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Mass.
Notable Achievements:
- Transitioned his agency from the Security Department to the Department of Public Safety
- Adopted new technology, including an incident reporting system, digital radios, key management and IP video to save more than $61,000 in 2012 and 2013
- Encouraged officers to receive IAHSS training, resulting in 96% being certified
Chris Cromer, the Director of Security at the Cone Health Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, N.C.
Notable Achievements:
- Increased department employee satisfaction scores from 70% to 95%
- Identified unused equipment such as cubicles to set up a private area for officers to take breaks and lunches
- Implemented 24/7 security coverage in the behavioral health unit
Drew Neckar, the Regional Director of Security at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, Wis.
Notable Achievements:
- Transitioned the incident reporting system from paper-based to computer-based
- Worked in conjunction with legal, compliance, pharmacy, nursing and human resources departments to establish a team to monitor and investigation drug diversions
- Oversaw the creation of the security operations center so the department can monitor security systems on all regional sites
Bryan Warren, the Director of Corporate Security at the Carolinas Healthcare System in Charlotte, N.C.
Notable Accomplishments:
- Created a new active shooter (Code Silver) training program distributed to several thousand employees and is recognized as a best practice by the local FBI office
- Conducted more than 20 site assessment in 2013
- Oversaw the renovation of his organization’s security call center
