CS Announces 2014 College and K-12 Campus Safety Director of the Year Finalists

Robert Pastula, Chief of Police, University of North Alabama, Florence, Ala.

Notable Achievements:

  • Updated the department’s patrol vehicle graphics to convey a more professional image
  • Obtained funding for off-campus parking sites around the city, coupled with a shuttle bus for students. This helped to address the lack of on-campus parking or public transportation system
  • Instituted a student nighttime auxiliary patrol to escort students during the evening hours

Ricardo Perez Jr., Chief of Police, Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Police Department, Edinburg, Texas

Notable Achievements:

  • Led the district in obtaining a $100,000 grant so his department could purchase seven new vehicles via the State of Texas fleet surplus program
  • Conducted school security surveys for all 43 campuses in one year and now has a police officer on each campus
  • Worked with maintenance to build secure entrances for each campus and implemented a system to track visitors

John Venuti, Chief of Police, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va.

Notable Achievements:

  • Nearly 95% of VCU students, faculty and staff who were surveyed reported they felt safe or very safe on campus
  • Upgraded VCU’s old video surveillance system and adopted in-car video and officer body microphones to help record interactions and improve investigations
  • Implemented a safety app for students. In just a first few weeks, the app was downloaded several thousand times.

August Washington, Chief of Police and Assistant Vice Chancellor, Vanderbilt University and Medical Center, Nashville, Tenn.

Notable Achievements:

  • The rate of burglary decreased by 46%; rate of motor vehicle theft decreased by 43%; and the rate of shoplifting theft decreased by 27%.
  • Department was the first in Tennessee to achieve triple accreditations through CALEA, IACLEA and TACP
  • Instituted a video patrol program that has assisted with criminal investigations
