Va. Tech Students Upset with 2-Factor Authentication

Students are arguing that the new system is inconvenient.

Virginia Tech students have created a petition against the new two-factor authentication system that the university implemented earlier this month.

Many of the students are arguing the new security process, which basically requires them to use two devices to log onto certain school websites, is inconvenient, according to collegiatetimes.com.

The petition, which has been signed by over 300 students, demands the university take down the system.

The system requires students to use a second device, such as a cell phone to receive a text, a landline to respond to an automated voice, the Duo Mobile App or a tablet, among other methods, in order to enter certain university networks.

According to a 2015 press release from Virginia Tech, “”The move to two-factor authentication is the culmination of an investigation that took place over the past two years. In response to the impact of password guessing and phishing attacks on Virginia Tech systems and users.”
