Tennessee State Announces 10-Point Plan to Improve School Security

The plan is a response to a fatal shooting on campus Oct. 22.

Tennessee State University officials released a 10 point plan to revamp campus security after a fatal shooting.

The Oct. 22 shooting, which was the result of a gambling dispute, left one non-student dead and three students injured.

During the university’s press conference Oct. 30, TSU President Glenda Baskin Glover said “The administration is taking a multifaceted approach to further enhance safety measures and strategically address the issue of ensuring there are not weapons or other illegal activity on campus.” President Glover also expressed condolences for the victims of the campus shooting, according to newschannel5.com.

The “Safety Enhancement Plan” Glover laid out includes:

1. Increased visibility of the TSU police force
2. A new TSU police satellite office near the courtyard area that was the site of the shooting
3. Requiring students, faculty and staff to wear IDs at all times
4. An anonymous tip hotline that compliments a new mobile TSU safety app
5. Cash rewards for the school’s See Something Say Something campaign
6. The creation of a Student Safety Patrol that allows male students to volunteer to accompany other students across campus
7. Increased rates of room inspections
8. Improved campus surveillance and lighting
9. The installation of more proximity readers throughout campus
10. The completion of Phase 2 of the fence project underway on campus
