The Social Sentinel™ service helps district safety and security officials better protect their communities by improving awareness and management of threats of potential violence, self-harm, or harm waged against students, staff, or school buildings shared on publicly available social media sites.

The service scans publicly available social media content and applies an algorithm and a set of keywords developed by safety and security experts to identify and deliver alerts for content that may contain a threat. To ensure that alerts are further refined for the safety concerns of our clients, our team works with each client specifically to apply geo-fences, when appropriate, and select additional, unique keywords. Those keywords and geo-fences, combined with other proprietary criteria, are turned into rules that, when applied against tens of thousands of public social media posts return targeted alerts that are sent to specific individuals for investigation (e.g, school administrators, local police, school counselors, etc.). Alerts can be shared by SMS or email should an alert require further investigation by district personnel and/or local authorities. Recipients of shared alerts do not need a Social Sentinel account to view them.

  • Using the Social Sentinel service, K12 safety and security personnel can automatically gather, assess, and manage hundreds of thousands of posts made on publicly available social media sites to identify suicidal thoughts and general threats of violence made against a person, a group of people, or a specific school or venue.
  • The Social Sentinel service scans the digital cloud 24/7/365 and automatically alerts school safety authorities granted access based upon district-defined roles and rights.
  • National experts in school safety and security developed and regularly update the algorithm and assess existing and new social media services for inclusion.
  • While the benefits of social media include connecting with friends, developing social contacts, and developing and expressing one’s identity, there is a darker side to information shared through social media. A significant percentage of incidents of self-harm; acts of violence targeted at facilities, teachers, and students; and acts of bullying are telegraphed through publicly facing social media. Using the Social Sentinel service, K12 administrators automatically gather, assess, and manage this information to identify suicidal thoughts and general threats of violence made against a person, a group of people, or a specific school or venue to better protect their communities.
