San Diego State Halts Fraternity Social Activities

Instead, fraternity and sorority members will receive training on sexual assault prevention and awareness.

California State University San Diego’s (CSUSD) Greek community leaders announced last week that all parties at fraternities have been indefinitely suspended. Fraternity and sorority members will now be trained on sexual assault prevention.

The suspension was prompted by several incidents, reports U-T San Diego. A “Take Back the Night” event was interrupted by fraternity members yelling obscenities, waving sex toys and throwing eggs at participants. A sexual assault at a party near campus was reported, as was an attempted abduction of a woman by six men.

In response, leaders of the Greek community met with university administrators and the campus sexual assault task force. The school and the Greek community leaders will discuss additional steps to be taken to address the issue of sexual violence this week.

CSUSD joins a long list of universities that have suspended their fraternities and/or sororities, including the University of Virginia, Elon University, the University of Southern California, West Virginia University and Cal State Northridge.
