Ohio Gov. Signs Campus Carry Bill into Law

The law allows college boards to change concealed gun policies on campus.

Ohio Governor John Kasich signed a bill that could allow licensed guns onto public college campuses Monday.

The law also allows licensed gun holders to carry weapons inside of school zones, daycare facilities, aircraft, certain government facilities and public areas of airport terminals.

Campus Safety had previously reported on the bill’s passage in the Ohio Congress Dec. 9. The bill was designed to modify a current law banning guns on all college campuses.

The new law allows the Board of Trustees at public universities to change their policies in regards to guns on campus. The boards would have to vote in order to allow the concealed firearms, reports tucsonnewsnow.com.

The new law will go into effect in 90 days.

A Kent State University spokesperson responded to the signing with the following statement:

“The potential passing of this bill was considered when our policy with regard to the possession, storage, or use of deadly weapons on campus was approved in September of this year,” the spokesperson said. “The current policy in place is representative of the university’s position on this issue.”
