Number of Patients Affected in Data Breach at Los Angeles Hospital Climbs to Over 33,000

Cedars-Sinai notified government officials that 33,136 patients’ medical records were on a laptop that was stolen from an employee’s house back in June.

CA – Cedars-Sinai Medical Center notified state and federal officials that 33,136 patients’ medical records were on a laptop that was stolen from an employee’s house back in June.

The laptop was protected by a password but was not protected by additional encryption software, reports the Los Angeles Times. The hospital said that the software had not been re-installed after a change had been made to the computer’s operating program.

The laptop contained patient records, which included patient names, medical data, health insurance policies, dates of birth and driver’s license numbers. The hospital said that around 1,500 patients’ social security numbers also were in those records.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center said it is currently working on confirming that all of its employees’ laptops are encrypted to prevent further data breaches.
